TMSA's coal handling and transport system is successfully supplied to the Pampa Sul Thermoelectric Power Plant, in RS

Project involved the delivery of a tubular belt conveyor, a yard conveyor with tripper and a transfer tower installed between the two pieces of equipment.

Operating since 2019, the Pampa Sul Thermoelectric Power Plant, located in the municipality of Candiota (RS), is considered one of the most important works aimed at the development of the southern region of Brazil. With an investment of around BRL 2.5 billion, the project has the capacity to generate 345 MW of energy.

One of the project's main highlights was the adoption of a more sustainable technology for energy generation: currently, the plant uses a Circulating Fluidized Bed type boiler, which, as it is more suitable for coal in the region, it is classified as a clean combustion technology, with low levels of gas emissions.

In order to ensure that the transport of coal took place safely and efficiently, Pampa Sul had the support of TMSA, a company that is a reference in the supply of equipment such as ship loaders and unloaders, environmental control systems, automation systems and belt conveyors including long distance and chain conveyors.

TMSA's performance in the project involved the turnkey delivery of a complete coal handling and transport system that met the region's environmental requirements. The solution would need to meet the level of noise pollution established by Pampa Sul, as well as the minimum impact on the region's fauna and flora, given that the conveyor's profile crosses an environmentally vulnerable area.

To meet the environmental requirements established by IBAMA and mitigate impacts on rural and urban areas, TMSA suggested the design of a Tubular Belt Conveyor (TBC) to transport the coal processed by Copelmi and the Plant's storage yard that are at a distance of 4.30 km.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS

"To comply with the environmental regulations established for the region between the Copelmi processing plant and the Pampa Sul plant, the selected equipment needed to meet a series of requirements, such as zero dispersion of fines and noise level below the limits required for rural areas and urban core. The TBC technology, provided by TMSA, was the most suitable and made it possible to meet these requirements”, says Janilson Rossa, Mechanical Engineer of the Contracting Company.

The solution stood out mainly for its ability to transport the material in an enclosed way, forming a tube that eliminates unwanted leaks during its course, in addition to enabling a profile with radii of vertical and horizontal curves much smaller than those required for conventional TCLD type conveyors.

Rossa points out that, since the project was conceived, TMSA adopted a partnership approach to solve the problems, being willing to participate in meetings with environmental agencies to present the adopted solutions and equipment features. “The engineering with customized solutions, the robustness of the equipment and the after-sales service were TMSA's main differentials”, adds the engineer from Pampa Sul.

TMSA TESTIMONIAL

In the view of Engineer Rui Camara – Engineering Manager at TMSA, previous experience with projects of tubular belt conveyors was decisive for the company to be chosen to supply the Coal Handling System. He also points out that, for the success of the project, TMSA's management structured an organizational chart dedicated to the Project, cohesively integrating all the work teams involved in its development.

"With our knowledge and international consultancy advice, we develop the mechanical and structural design establishing very strict design, manufacturing and assembly parameters to avoid operational problems that are common with this type of equipment and that arise mainly in the commissioning and assisted operation”, concludes engineer Rui Camara.

In addition to the TBC, TMSA also supplied a yard conveyor fitted with a tripper and transfer tower installed between the two pieces of equipment. The system, as a whole, has the capacity to transport up to 550 tons of coal per hour.
